One of the biggest names in the steel manufacturing industry, Lakshmi Mittal had a very humble beginning in his native state, Rajasthan, in India. Due to a lack of entrepreneurial activities in Rajasthan, his father shifted base to Calcutta (now Kolkata). His father ran a steel business himself by the name of Nippon Denro Ispat.
Having completed his education from Kolkata, Lakshmi Mittal opened his first steel factory, PT Ispat in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. He wanted to open the company in his native country but the Indian Government had placed huge curbs on steel production at that time.
Subsequently, he shifted base to London when he bought the Irish steel plant based in Cork, Ireland. He had to close down this plant and face a legal suit filed by the Irish Government. He bought a string of steel companies in England and became one of the biggest business magnates in the world. He proved his capability of being at the top by investing 38% of the capital of Arcelor, the world’s largest steel manufacturing company. Today, the company is known by the name ArcelorMittal.
Lakshmi Mittal is a living example of a person proving that one can achieve anything provided he is ready to work hard and make the necessary sacrifices. He is a generous man to the core, having donated huge sums of money to the British Labour party in England. He has a philanthropic mind as well. He has donated huge sums of money for the establishment of educational institutions in his native state, Rajasthan in India. He has donated a huge sum of 15 million to the Great Ormond Hospital in London, making it the largest ever private donation received by the hospital.
Today he is the 56th richest person in the world with the Forbes magazine naming him as the 57th most powerful individual in the world.
What should you take away in all of this?
What you should take away is, you will run into a lot of adversity when you choose to start your own business. Make it a priority to get out of your comfort zone. This amazing entrepreneur had to relocate and shift bases many times to get what he wanted.
If you currently have a dream and you can not achieve it in your current location, I advise you to move and continue to chase your dream. Life is too short to waste any time.
